Hinault: “Fignon is below par.”

Was it his failure to mount disk wheels, the accumulated fatigue from riding 1,000km at the front of the bunch, or simply “un jour sans,” as a French report has suggested?

Whatever the reason, the biggest surprise after today’s individual time trial in Nantes is the extremely poor showing of Laurent Fignon, who finished 32nd on the day, nearly 4 minutes behind stage winner Hinault and 3 minutes behind 2nd-placed LeMond.

Having finished his ride an hour before, Hinault was asked to comment for French TV. Trying to appear as kind as possible, Hinault commented, “This is a real surprise for me. I knew he wasn’t going like the Fignon of ’84, but this performance is still below par.”
